Today we’d like to introduce you to Erika Pinzer.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Originally from Tarija, a small city in Bolivia close to the Border of Argentina, I came to the the US for the first time as a foreign exchange student when I was just 16. I studied in Waterford, WI, a small town outside of Milwaukee. Being in the US for a year, I fell in love with the Midwest. After graduating High School, I moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina to study Journalism at the Universidad Argentina de la Empresa. After spending 2 years studying journalism, I finally felt that my true calling was in the beauty industry and I decided to completely switch my studies to Medical Esthetics and Cosmetology, I then transferred to Universidad de Moron, one of the most prestigious universities for dermatology and skin care in Argentina, where I gained valuable experience studying and working under Dr. Russo, one of the most renowned Dermatologists in Buenos Aires. While attending college, I also enrolled at Pino Institute to study cosmetology to complement my knowledge of skin care. After 4 years of studying in Argentina and earning a degree in Medical Aesthetics and a License in Cosmetology, I had the opportunity to come to the United States in 2010 and took advantage of the opportunity and after a few months of traveling the country, ended up in Chicago, where I decided to start a family and officially start my career. In the first 6 years of my career, I gained valuable knowledge and experience working as a nail technician, cosmetologist, medical esthetician, salon manager, and even briefly as a skin care educator. I always knew I wanted to own my own business, but after 4 years of being the General Manager at a large salon and spa in the suburbs, I decided it was finally the time to take the leap and open my own business with the experience and knowledge I had accumulated over my 6 years of working in the beauty industry. Finally, in May of 2016, all of the pieces finally came together and I was able to open EGA Salon and Spa in Lakeview East, firmly establishing my roots here in the Midwest, where my dream once started.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As Theodore Roosevelt once said “nothing worth having comes easy” and I really believe that is case for any new business. In a marketplace as competitive as Chicago, your business must really stand out in order for people to take notice and you must do something all of the others don’t do, and you must do it well. We feel like we are able to deliver on that and have heard a lot of positive feedback on our concept, services, and overall value. Our biggest hurdle by far is the simple fact that the salon and spa industry does not create immediate demand like a restaurant or a retail store does, simply for the fact the people only get salon and spa services done at most once a month and sometimes up to 6 months between visits, so building clientele isn’t as simple as opening your doors. Time and patience is a huge factor in a salon and spa’s growth, and with the perfect business model you can expect for it to fully flourish after maybe two years. Every day has its new struggles and lessons, but with a lot of effort and time, I truly believe you can reap the benefits of your labors and we already see new rewards every day.
We’d love to hear more about your business.

What were you like growing up?
As a child, I was enthralled with beauty and fashion. I remember as young as 5 I would take my mom’s rollers and put them in and sleep with them. As I got older, I used to do my mom’s nails. One of my favorite hobbies was shopping and going out with friends. I always had cases and cases of makeup and rarely went a day without doing my makeup. I was always very social and liked to be the leader of the group and be the one to make decisions.
