Today we’d like to introduce you to Erielle Bakkum.
Erielle, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have always been obsessed with capturing the moment. When I was little and I didn’t have a camera, I would find a scene I liked, line it up perfectly behind my eyeballs, and snap the photo with my eyelids. I would take the ‘photo’ over and over again until I got it just right in my brain.
My father had a darkroom while I was growing up and took hundreds of photos of me and my siblings. I have grown up with these black & white memories of my family together, and they have shaped how I view photographs of childhood.
Although I have loved photography for as long as I can remember, I began to focus on newborn and child photography when I had my own children. They became my world, and I realized what amazing subjects they are.
Always moving, always changing, never the same. I became obsessed with capturing childhood, both of my own children and other people’s children.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
You will hear this from every mother who owns a business. And you will hear it from every mother who strives to create art. The biggest challenge has been finding a balance between my family’s needs, my client’s needs, and my own needs.
Each area takes love, time, and thought. It’s a constant effort keep each afloat, and to decide when it’s safe to delve deep into one, fully enjoying it and immersing yourself in it, without worrying or feeling guilty that the other areas aren’t getting the care that they need.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Some of my most meaningful work has focused on skin-to-skin bonding between mothers and their newborns. Newborns are vulnerable and delicate, yet the bond with their mothers is powerful and instinctive.
During skin-to-skin sessions, I encourage mothers to hold their babies close, smell them, and enjoy them. I get up close and snap away, filling the entire image with lots of skin, warmth, and love.
I have a fierce nostalgia for these days with my own babies. Those moments are not coming back. It is an honor to connect with other mothers on this level and to provide them with memories of their baby’s transition from life on the inside to life on the outside.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Plenty of people have told me that joy in the moment is something that I convey. Being able to recognize that joy in people, bring it out, and capture it, is a quality that I value in myself. Children are the most joyful subjects there are, and when I can mirror that joy, capture it, and freeze it in time, I have done my job.
