Today we’d like to introduce you to Eric Mills.
Eric, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I went to the University of Cincinnati where I played Division 1 soccer and then continued on to Indiana University where I completed my undergraduate work in Kinesiology. I then obtained my physical therapy degree from Saint Louis University. I have been practicing physical therapy since 2007 and honed my skills in the downtown Chicago community since 2008 as well as starting my career in Scottsdale, AZ. I have worked for both small, single owned PT clinics as well as big box companies and decided to open up my own business based on what I liked and didn’t like about each place I’ve been. I started Flow Physical Therapy in 2017 to provide individualized, one-on-one care to the community of Chicago. Flow uses the most up to date, research based techniques to create personalized programs for each individual’s specific injury. It was opened in Lateral Fitness to help bring a holistic approach to rehabilitation by having physical therapists, MAT specialists, massage therapists, personal trainers, Pilates instructors and nutritionists under one roof. Throughout my career, I have worked with patients ranging in age from 10 years old to over 90 years old as well as working with professional soccer, basketball, football and baseball players.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Some of the challenges to opening a new physical therapy clinic have been getting doctors to change their habits of referring patients to the bigger companies because of how long they’ve been around and how many more clinics they have in the city. I have also been trying to get out into the surrounding community as much as possible and let them know that they have an experienced therapist close by who is willing to give them 100% of my time.
Please tell us about Flow Physical Therapy.
Flow Physical Therapy is a one-on-one oriented company that was started to help patients get better faster. If you are spending more time with your therapist while going through the manual therapy and skilled exercises, under their care, you will improve in a more timely manner. We cover everything from spine, shoulder, elbow, hip, knee and foot/ankle injuries to balance and gait disorders. One of the things that help set us apart from other PT companies is that we have partnered with Lateral Fitness to place therapists, chiropractors, personal trainers, Pilates instructors, massage therapists, acupuncturists, and nutritionists under one roof. You won’t find that in too many other physical therapy clinics!
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memories from my childhood were just being outside. Whether it was in the front yard playing with my friends, playing traveling soccer or cookouts in the backyard with my family.
