Meet David Redick of Elite Yacht Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Redick.

David, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was 17 years old and a mentor of mine gave me a book, “You’re Hired” written by Bill Rancic a local Chicagoan who gained his fame through being the first apprentice for Donald Trump and ended up helping manage the building of Trump Tower here in Chicago. Bill had Serviced Boats in New Buffalo, MI during his summer years of college and after graduating went on to create a very successful business he then sold a few years later called Cigars Around The World. He went on to write this book and in this.

Ok, this is where my inspiration to become an entrepreneur began. I was just about to graduate high school and it is this book that sparked the flame to begin my writing my own story for my life. We began as a yacht detailing service in 2010 out of Portage, IN and over the last seven years we have grown to service over 500 yachts a season located in over 40 different marinas, boat yards and harbors in WI, IL, IN and MI. We are the fastest growing and largest mobile service provider on Lake Michigan. It’s been one of the greatest journeys of my life. I’ve been able to serve and in some cases mentored by some of the most successful entrepreneurs in the world. Being around these successful people has helped shaped my vision and my purpose for life. I’ve learned that to be successful the first thing you need is a strong determination and mindset to keep moving forward no matter How tough the road me be. This mindset has helped drive Elite to become a dominant and the most well-known yacht service brand across Lake Michigan. We take pride in our top-rated customer service as well as the speed of delivering our services to clients. As a business, we have grown 80-125% in revenue each year since we began and currently in 2017 we have already surpassed 2016’s revenue and on track to double revenue once again. As I look forward to the years ahead I will always be grateful to the mentors who have helped moved my business along through strategic advice and time they have spent with me. The greatest thing a young entrepreneur can do to get ahead in life is to be bold, stay deliberate and focused, outwork your competition and to find a mentor who will help you make wise choices.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest struggle I faced a few years into the business was not going big quicker. I stayed small and was scared to invest heavily back into my business. If I had to start again today I would have not been afraid to invest more into good people to get the momentum moving much quicker. Most small businesses stay small because they are afraid to invest back into the business. You have to treat your business like a living organism. It needs to be fed and nurtured to keep going. Majority of businesses try to cut costs and save money when their real focus should be on increasing INCOME. Income is king. You can’t do anything without revenue coming in the door.

Elite Yacht Services helps make boating easy and is the #1 stop for service on Lake Michigan. We serve over 500 boat owners and cover over 300 miles of lakefront! We specialize in high end yacht management and service maintenance from bow to stern.

I take pride in our retention rate of customers. We are well above industry standards with less than a 10% turnover rate with growth each season upwards of 100% the last several years. Our customer service and attention to details is untouchable. We have grabbed the attention of hundreds and hundreds of customers with how far we go to make customers happy. We have had countless mistakes but it’s how we handle problems that arise that separates us from dozens of competitors around the lake. Our success lies in how well we take care of our customers.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
The most important aspect I believe is just sticking with the task at hand. Through the thick and the thin, you have to have the character to stay strong and bold. There have been countless times I’ve been afraid of what’s to come but I’ve never backed down from a problem or a challenge in front of me. I created my business without a single clue how I would even grow it. I just put my head down and showed up every day with an energy and excitement for life. I was only 18yrs old, what did I have to lose anyways? In some cases, it’s the fear that drives me to push hard and to think more creatively. Innovation in most cases comes from problems and fear.
