Meet Cheryl Vargas of Web Sis in La Grange

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cheryl Vargas.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I worked at my first computer help desk in 1994 due to a savage interest in computer technology that helped convince a company to hire me. My actual job title at the time was meeting planner.

The advent of the internet was changing the way people were conducting meetings and I wanted to have the skill set to be a part of it. I was born with the entrepreneurial spirit, it has been a driving force in my life since I was a kid. My first business venture was at 9 years old when I asked my mom for a Kenner’s Give-a-Show Projector so that I could make my fortune selling movie tickets and popcorn to my friends.

Has it been a smooth road?
Ha ha, no it has not been an easy road! I’ve been self-employed as an event planner, professional organizer, a web and graphic designer. I found out I’m better as a teacher and a leader. I’m a multi-passionate creative and that can lead to a heap of frustration.

But I can finally say, I’m happy with where I’m at now. I’ve waited my whole life for a bachelor’s degree and I’ll have it in May of 2018.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Web Sis – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Fast forward 20 years and I’m still going at it! I’m the CEO of Web Sis. Web Sis provides website design help for the DIY CEO. The big companies, the Wix, Shopify, Squarespace, they offer a product that customers can build by dragging and dropping to make a pretty, functional site. We pick up where they leave off with a personalized approach to helping people get through some frustrating times. We educate them on what a website needs to draw traffic. So Web Sis officially launched July 11, yeah seriously! But it’s amazing because on the internet things happen fast and there’s a real need for this service, I’m overwhelmed by the response! So many small business owners trying to DIY their own websites and struggling in the process. Prior to founding Web Sis, I was building websites, designing logos and going to school full-time at Concordia University.

I’m much more suited to interacting with people and teaching. Web Sis supports the DIY CEO by providing website design help through one-on-one instruction, group classes and how-to-videos. The service I provide, you could call it CEO handholding.

Small business owners come to me when they’re frustrated because perhaps they’ve built a website and they’re not seeing any traffic to their site or they’re just stuck in their website build. The bad part is they’re still paying month-to-month for a site that is not getting them any customers. I help the customer get her website finished and search engine optimized by teaching the steps necessary to make that happen. I also have a tech team who can fix problems directly on their sites. Once they start getting traffic it’s just a matter of selling what they have to offer. I help with improving their customer’s user experience too by offering website critiques. I offer WordPress one-on-one instruction as well as group classes for beginner and intermediate users, My search engine optimization classes are of course, applicable across platforms, for any website. I offer a FREE eBook/planner for the DIY CEO who is doing her own website build. There’s “What’s Wrong with My Site” – a website critique service that provides you a video journey of what a new user/web designer/graphic designer/photographer sees when visiting your site, its $49. And there’s a group WordPress Intro class for $89 as well as one-on-one lessons. There’s also a Facebook Group for DIY CEO’s who are building their own sites. Links to all products are on the LinkTree address provided. Please feel free to ask questions or tell me where you’re stuck!

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I’m proud when, as an instructor, a student expresses that “they get it”, because of how I taught it.

The Before You Build Workbook is no longer free, but still available. And you’ll find some product prices have changed. This article was written in June and published in September, so, there’s that. Thanks for your understanding and please come visit me.
