Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsea Jones.
Chelsea, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
The Chelsea jones brand started with the quest to make women’s heels feel better. For heels to feel more like running shoes with support, flexibility + cushioning all built into effortless styles for work + travel.
The idea came to me while working in investor relations, wearing heels to work every day. One day I got home, my feet throbbing in pain, saw my running shoes sitting at the front door and thought: I wish high heels could feel more like running shoes. I started to notice how often other women would complain about their heels and decided I might be the person to fix this problem.
So, I started sketching, cutting up shoes, and researching the possibilities. Knowing nothing about the shoe business, I asked a lot of questions, had a lot of trials and errors, and step-by-step various parts along the path lit up. The original design concept, the SKIGH High Heel, has been tested, redeveloped and improved several times over to create what you see today: the look of a high heel, the feel of a running shoe.
Has it been a smooth road?
The road has definitely not been smooth! I’ve learned a ton about consumer products over the last five years and have had to change direction multiple times. Some challenges have included quality issues with our first factory, where some of the heels were coming off. We had to figure out which production run it was, how many and quickly resolve it with our customers and retailers. On the positive side, we were able to find and move over to a better factory which improved the product immensely. There’s been a few instances of retailers going out of business, not being able to pay us, or other ones paying very late. This really hurts cash flow to keep the business alive and growing. We’ve had issues with hundreds of barcode labels being incorrect and needing to be replaced, and our fulfillment centers not handling exchanges and returns correctly. The positive side to any of these issues is it forces you to analyze it, find a better solution and continue to evolve.

We’re a women’s footwear company on a mission to make high heels feel more like running shoes. To do this, we build in athletic-inspired components like ultra-cushioned insoles, arch support, flexibility and thick rubber traction soles to absorb impact. I’m most proud when I hear from women raving about the shoes and how they’re working in their everyday lives. This is the whole reason I started the company, so to see or hear about it working in action, there’s no better feeling! What sets us apart is our components and the fresh effortless style of the brand.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the diversity of this city and how there’s always so much going on! Events, festivals, concerts, trade shows, you get to meet so many great people from all over the world in Chicago. I read that there’s no one industry here that makes up more than 10% of the economy, which is great for start-up and stability. The things I like least are the reports on crime and the traffic.
