Meet Carly Moeller of Unpatterned in Ravenswood Manor

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carly Moeller.

Carly, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My schooling and training is in architecture. I even went so far as to obtain my license in Illinois, but my true passion has always been interiors. It just took me a little while to get to the point of embracing it fully! I had great experiences working for a small contractor, a commercial and residential architecture firm, and finally a small residential architecture/construction company focused on renovations, including interiors. I took some time away from the design world during the recession and found myself beginning to advise friends on their decor. Soon I found myself freelancing for friends of friends and then after having my daughter, I made a true commitment to Unpatterned as a business, building it on the side while working a part time job. I was lucky enough over the years to have worked for a variety of entrepreneurs and I think that really shaped some of my philosophies for running my own business. Finally, in 2015 I made the leap to be Unpatterned all the time, and it has been the best decision. We really grew our portfolio from 2015 to 2016, and this year is only continuing the momentum.

Has it been a smooth road?
I think owning your own business, no matter the profession or how successful you are, always has very high points and low points. While I thankfully haven’t had to struggle for work itself, learning how to successfully run a company, maintain my personal and family life, and stay a somewhat sane person has been the biggest learning curve. There is that pressure to always be “on.” Creating boundaries and carving out time for myself outside of my business has been one of the most challenging aspects. Also in the beginning, I said yes to everything. Learning to be more thoughtful in our approach to design and what kinds of projects truly are a good fit for Unpatterned and our potential clients is also becoming an important piece of the equation, which can be tough! Lastly, figuring out when to take the leap of bringing in outside help is a constant struggle, but we have created some great partnerships over the last year and have more in the works!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Unpatterned is a full-service interior design firm. We work on residential and commercial renovations, new construction homes and decorating projects that range from a whole home, down to a singular space. We thrive in all three areas of our service offerings, but feel the most passionate about renovations. There is something extra special about transforming an existing space to work for a new user and readapting what is there to make it their own, that really resonates with us from a lifestyle and environmental perspective. Complete renovation transformations are our proudest moments. Nothing beats a good before and after. We are known for our thoughtful use of color, our ability to adapt to existing constrictions, and mixing high and low finishes and furnishings. Truly listening to and delivering our client’s wants and needs, taking ego out of the process, sets Unpatterned apart.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Chicago is a great place for interior design and definitely a good place to be. It’s large enough that there’s enough work to go around, diverse enough that there’s a client and a designer for every personality and style, and creative enough to produce a thriving industry. Yet at the same time, Chicago is small enough that you don’t feel like you are all alone in it.
