Meet Calex Thomas of Sepia Consultation in Evergreen Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Calex Thomas.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Calex. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
As a teenager growing up on the Southside, I tended to straddle the line between good and not so good. It was during this time that I met a high school counselor who wouldn’t give up on me and who made an indelible impression on me. It was because of him that I first considered being a counselor. After high school, I spent some time in the Army and worked in Information Technology for a few years before deciding to pursue my interest in counseling. I eventually went back to school earning my Master’s degree in Counseling and working through my internships, contract positions and other jobs to gain experience. I found out a couple of things during this journey. One, many people felt there was a need for more male counselors especially African American Males. Two, too many people who had tried counseling had horror stories about indifferent and self-absorbed counselors who provided a bad experience for them. My thought was I can do better and clients deserve better. So Sepia Consultations was born. The mission being providing the best possible service to clients with their concerns and wellbeing as the primary concern.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has definitely not been a smooth road! Acquiring the necessary licenses, insurance, finding a location and learning how to get on-board as a provider were just some of the steps I had to complete. Complicating the matter was the fact that I didn’t have anyone to guide me through the process. It was all research, trial and error.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Sepia Consultations – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Sepia Consultations LLC. is a full service single operator counseling service offering individual, Couples, Drug & Alcohol and Anger Management Counseling. It was started as a contracting/consulting business in 2011 and opened the office in Evergreen Park in 2012 with option to perhaps expand later. The thing I am most proud of is being able to meet clients where they are cognitively and emotionally and to be able to help them resolve the issues that made them seek counseling in the first place. I think what sets me apart is my willingness to work around the client’s schedule and finances. Also, listening to the people’s stories attentively and non-judgmentally, before trying to help them.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My plans are to keep offering the best services I can and perhaps expand one day to provide jobs and resources for new counselors who are trying to get experience and hours towards their licensure.
