Meet Brooke Perlman of Lessons By Brooke & Company

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brooke Perlman.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I went to Elmhurst College and was a music education major with a vocal performance certificate and a Spanish minor. Right out of college, I landed what I thought was my dream job as a 7th and 8th-grade chorus and general music teacher. After my first year, I knew this was not where I would be forever. I loved my students but did not enjoy the other aspects of teaching in a school setting. During my second year at the school, I started teaching customized, in-home, private music lessons and my goal was to have 10 students. I knew that if 10 families were interested, I could grow from there and eventually leave my full-time teaching job. By March of that year, I had 10 students and a wait list of 10 more. At this point, I gave notice to my job that I would not be returning the following school year. This was not an easy choice, but I knew that it was the right path for me. I continued to grow my client base and by the fall, my schedule was full (around 30 students per week) and I had a waitlist again. Not wanting to turn those families down, I decided to reach out to some of my friends from Elmhurst College to see if they would like to teach for my company as independent contractors. They were as excited about the opportunity as I was and I truly owe where we are as a company today to them (thank you, Marissa & Erin!). At this point, 2 years and 4 months since I officially opened Lessons By Brooke & Company, we have 11 active teachers and between all of us, we are teaching roughly 60 lessons per week!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I can honestly say that, this has been much smoother than I ever imagined opening a business would be. The toughest part of initially deciding to go for this was figuring out how I would manage to have my own health insurance. Coming from a public school teaching job where benefits were great, that was really scary! Along the way, other challenges have come up with finding quality teachers to hire and working out the ever-changing schedules of 60+ students and 11 teachers, but everything has worked out in the end and I’ve learned to trust that it always will!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Lessons By Brooke & Company – what should we know?
Lessons By Brooke & Company, LLC. is a customized, in-home, private lesson business specializing in bringing music education directly to your home across the city and suburban areas. We primarily teach vocal and piano lessons but have recently branched out to add guitar, bass and more! One of my favorite aspects of our company is that we are able to come into the homes of incredible families and share the gift of music with so many. We are proud to bring our talents to the community by hosting our recitals and holiday performances at local coffee shops and nursing homes. As the owner and founder of Lessons By Brooke & Company, I am truly the proudest of my instructor team. If you take a look at the “about our instructors” page on our website, you’ll see a group of the most talented music educators around. They are kind and warm and truly love what they do! I believe that our instructor team as well as bringing music into the homes of our students therefore eliminating the need to travel for a 30-minute lesson sets us apart from other private lesson studios in the area.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
There are SO many people who have influenced, guided and encouraged me along the way, I’m not sure where to start! My mom, dad, brother, fiance, family & friends have been so supportive with their advice, dealing with my hectic schedule and for listening to me as I hash out the details of what I want for Lessons By Brooke & Company. A huge thank you needs to go out to everyone who has referred us for private lessons by word of mouth, email, social media (especially those fantastic Facebook groups for moms)! I also need to share my gratitude for my teachers, specifically Maya Kramer, Deb Utley, Jen Mather, Susan Moninger, Donna Tallman, Judy Grimes, Mark Streder, Ross Kellan, Doug Beach and many others at Elmhurst College who helped to shape me as a confident musician and educator. Lastly, this all would not be possible without my instructor team, our students and their families. They are absolutely instrumental in our success and growth and I could not thank them enough in this short article for their hard work and dedication!
