Meet Sandra Rust of Bever Digital Design in Joliet

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandra Rust.

Sandra Rust graduated from Columbia College with a BA in fine art. She majored in photography, with a minor in fine art/graphic design. In her junior/senior year, she studied fine art painting under 2 well-known artists at Columbia, Hollis Sigler and Pat Olsen. Sandra won the “1st Place Presidents Award” in painting during her senior year at Columbia College.

Sandra started BEVER DIGITAL DESIGN in 2007 which provides services in commercial photography, web, illustration & graphic design.

Has it been a smooth road?
Well, the road definitely had its ups and downs. I started out as a commercial photographer’s assistant. I remember the hard work, and the long hours. We would have to load and unload trucks, setup lighting, and stage houses/sets for so many different types of product ads. I really enjoyed the location photography, and the studio saw my talent and began using me for their lifestyle photography. Ad agencies would layout the ads, and or storyboards and I would design the sets from them. I think that experience working with top agencies gave me a lot of experience and knowledge in photo, design and layout. There was a lot of paperwork to get city permits and professional talent-model/property releases! I noticed that I would be a photo rock-star for a while, and then suddenly the next photo rock-star would emerge and say “move over!” I would have to go back to the drawing board and recreate and reinvent myself! Design. imaging, photography is always changing and emerging in different directions. I think it’s mostly the choices I made that helped me along the way. I had to make the choice of to stay updated on my education because things were constantly changing, and then update and work on my portfolio annually. So the downside was coming up with the extra money for school, and then burning the midnight oil to find time to work on my own creative projects in order to update my portfolio. When I didn’t meet the updated portfolio requirements, it was hard to find steady work…. I would find myself literally out of work!

It was there that the storybook weddings and lifestyle image libraries began!

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Chicago is a great place for starting a design business, due to the large population and the diversity of the city. I think the city of Chicago offers so much for a web, graphic, or photography studio start-up. I would suggest the city remove any permits and welcome all artists free to the city parks. Start-up businesses and or students really need a break to get their company moving forward.
