Meet Betina Gozo of Canvas Training

Today we’d like to introduce you to Betina Gozo.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Betina. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’m a Nike Master Trainer and the founder of Canvas Training. My background is all over the place! I grew up as a dancer and entertainer, dancing on my school’s dance teams and performing in plays and musicals. I played bass in rock bands after high school, and I landed on playing in at top 40 cover band full time for 5 years. With all the late nights, traveling, college shows, and 3 hour sets, I realized how quickly you can run your body down if you don’t take care of it.

I once took a bootcamp class with a roommate, and I realized how out of shape I was! Instead of letting it defeat me, I let it fuel me. I worked out with a personal trainer and took many more bootcamp classes, and I became addicted to the endorphin high and also really surprised myself. My true passion lies in influencing and inspiring change in people’s lives. I really wanted to make this same feeling happen for all people, so I became a certified personal trainer.

After a few years of teaching group fitness classes and training people at various studios in Chicago, I became the Director of Fitness at CrossTown Fitness, overseeing both locations, trainers, and programming all while being offered a Master Trainer Contract from Nike.

After 3 and a half years at CTF, I had the opportunity to move to Portland, OR and be closer to the Nike World Headquarters. Still having many clients that wanted to train with me, I founded Canvas Training to be able to train all my clients across the United States. Canvas Training’s philosophies lie in holistic fitness focused on bridging training into everyday life.

I am currently training full time at Nike World Headquarters teaching classes and working with the brand to grow Nike Training while operating Canvas Training. I was recently selected to be one of five finalists in the Women’s Health Next Fitness Star competition, and I couldn’t be more thrilled!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I’ve run into a few personal obstacles along the way. I’ve been discriminated against because I am brown. I’ve been in unhealthy relationships, some physically abusive, some emotionally unhealthy. I married a man trying to patch up the holes in our relationship and it ended only 6 months later.

I was born in the Philippines and raised by a single mom who never received child support and worked hard to give me a good life, other moms weren’t always nice to her. We lived poorly for a long time, lived in ways my mom laughs about now, but was ashamed for then.

I’ve never been one to talk about my struggles because I’ve never wanted them to define who I am. I’ve always just used them all to fuel me to make me stronger and to work harder.

No one or nothing can diminish your pride or self-esteem unless you it.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Canvas Training – what should we know?
When I created Canvas Training, it was just about still training my clients in Chicago. Then I became overwhelmed because I was doing a lot of work, and my schedule was starting to get busy, and in some cases, clients couldn’t afford what I was charging. I wanted to create something for everyone, but still stick true to my training style.

Group Fitness has become so popular, and so have all these online training programs. So I created 3 different levels of programming aimed at novice, intermediate and advance level gym goers that include 8 weeks of strength and conditioning workouts, nutrition and healthy habit guides, and more! Canvas is all about providing tools for people to live healthy lives, so created exactly that. 🙂

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I first worked at Flirty Girl Fitness and The Barre Code (Barre Bee Fit), and I learned so much from the women and managers at those studios. When I started working at CrossTown Fitness, I never thought I would be where I am today. That place made me a better trainer, manager, leader, and person. The owner, Charlie Graff, saw something in me where he trusted me to help run and grow his gym, and I can’t thank him enough. Nike noticed me from working at CTF, and offered me a Nike Master Trainer contract, which I NEVER thought would ever be in my future. Working with Nike has connected me with amazing trainers across the country, who make me want to be a better trainer every single day. Lastly, I find so much inspiration from every single client that I come in contact with. The drive that each client has and their journey is so empowering, and it’s so humbling to be a part of that.
