Today we’d like to introduce you to Ben Bradley.

Ben, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I got laid off and decided that it was time to do my own thing. I’m a better owner than an employee.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wish the road was smooth. When we started, we’d get stuck in the sell-then-deliver valley of death. In other words, when we were delivering work, we were not selling, when we were selling, we were not delivering. Once we fixed that, next came fine tuning our delivery processes. Now the struggle (and the fun) is constant reinvention. Each iteration gets easier.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Macon Raine – what should we know?
Our website says that we are a “Chicago B2B marketing agency.” The truth is we are “less than a marketing agency.” In other words, we’re not full-service. We specialize in helping growing businesses scale their marketing departments so that they can afford a big, full-service agency. We like being lean and being able to read each other’s mind. I have no aspirations to increase headcount much beyond the current level. We’re effective, profitable and clients seem to respect us.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I was too stupid to know better. My most essential qualities are persistence and stupidity.
