Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheri Gostomelsky.
Sheri, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My father, Allen was an entrepreneur. I watched how hard both he and my mother worked. And looking back, their dedication to work and family was due to their parents, who immigrated to the United States to create a better life. It’s actually a nice paying it forward story. My parents went to junior college and insisted that my sister and I take it a step further and work toward bachelors degrees. None of our cousins went to college and truthfully, I was not a very good student. I saw no reason to go. My high school counselor secured a spot for me at the University of Illinois in physical education. And for those who know me, I was always the one picked last in gym class. It wasn’t really the right fit.
As fate works, a kind and patient guidance counselor walked me into Speech and Hearing Science. It didn’t take long for me to know that Audiology was the right path. I’ve worked in every imaginable environment from industrial to a hospital and educational and everything in between. The one piece that was missing in every setting was taking time with patients. We all deserve to be heard and to tell our story. That was the driving force for going into private practice. Spending more time with the people I cared for. Audiologists specialize in ears. Hearing and balance is our livelihood. So, just as my father did in the past, I bravely hung a shingle with my name and knocked on doors to get physicians to refer their patients to me. And 18 years later, I have a business that grows every year. And 40 years later, I still love coming to work every day. My job is fun.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Owning a small business has its challenges when you are the only employee. A call to jury duty shut me down for a week. Breast cancer threw me a curveball. While self-employed, I chose to work on my doctorate. Raising a family, earning a degree and owning a business required a bit of juggling. I couldn’t have managed any of this without my dear husband who got our two daughters where they needed to be and cooked dinner most nights. My family and friends have always been there to support me. My mother, sister, and brother in law jumped in to greet patients, answer phones and take care of the financials to avert a personal crisis. My mentor audiologist is a parent who raised 3 children single-handedly and grew a successful multi-location business. I believe that if you surround yourself with the right people, life’s struggles will work out. We were invited to join a select group of audiologists 6 years ago. Audigy Group helped grow our business 59% the first year. It was overwhelming and I hope to never work that hard again. We have had growing pains and have moved the business 3 times in the same building to accommodate our explosive growth
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Audiology Associates of Deerfield is a boutique practice that specializes in protecting and improving hearing, one patient at a time. We evaluate hearing, fit custom and non-custom ear protection, evaluate and treat tinnitus (ear noises), fit hearing aids and listening devices. Anyone who is exposed to loud levels of noise at the gym, sporting events, riding a motorcycle, mowing the lawn, playing a musical instrument should be evaluated. Maintaining good hearing and helping our patients to be part of the conversation is what we do best. Our small company grows every year by taking special care and interest in each person that walks through our door. We take the time to listen. We know our patient’s families and they know ours. I believe that the culture of our business is what sets us apart. Our patients love coming in to see us. We have cutting-edge technology. When patients reach out to us for help, we act, whether it means coming in early, staying late or making a home visit. We are well liked in the community and make sure that each person gets the best care, regardless of finances. We give back to the community by providing ear protection through the Adopt a Band program and donate regularly to the Deerfield Food Pantry and Susan F. Lasky Foundation. Our three Doctors of Audiology exceed the requirements of continuing education to maintain their licensure and provide the highest standard of care. We adhere to using best practices and make evidence-based decisions. Research shows that personal care promotes success and care is what we do best.
What were you like growing up?
I was a thoughtful child, artistic and easy going. Fought endlessly with my sister who is now my best friend. I was not a good student. Goody two shoes. Rule follower Don’t park in the no parking zone. Loved to bake, cook and sew. Family came first. And guess what. Nothing much has changed.
