Meet Susan Blackman of Art Advisory, Ltd.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Susan Blackman.

Susan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been in the art world since 1986 in some fashion, and in my current incarnation since 2002 as an art advisory. I’ve owned an art gallery, managed 5 galleries, was the director of corporate art and now the principal of Art Advisory, Ltd.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Back in the 80’s, after graduating with an MBA, I thought I had this whole “business thing” under wraps, but really, being an entrepreneur was not taught to me in grad school. I flew by the seat of my pants, in the beginning. But as time went by I began to figure it out. Actually, I still am learning. The art business now is way different than when I began.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Art Advisory, Ltd. – what should we know?
Art Advisory, Ltd. is a full-service art advisory firm. We offer services to corporate, residential and healthcare clients. We assess our clients aesthetic and art needs to procure 1 piece or many. We also manage collections, deaccession collections, move collections, commission, appraise, write Monographs, work with architects and interior designers; basically anything that has to do with artwork. No project is too small or too large for our firm. As a company, I’m most proud of our steady growth over these challenging years and the fun, innovative, yet highly individualized collections Art Advisory, Ltd has created. Being in the art industry for 32 years sets us apart. There is wisdom in longevity on many levels.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
The ability to morph quickly is important to success. Every project/client has different needs and desires and we are able to speak to each client’s requirements because of our vast library of resources. We don’t represent artists, rather, we represent our clients in the art world. As such, we have no inventory; our overhead is low and we pass those savings to our clients. Win/win for all.
