Today we’d like to introduce you to Angelica Lewis.
Angelica, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In 2013, my life was spinning out of control! My anxiety was high and I found myself in this pit of depression, confusion, and anger. I was working for a highly stressful organization and my personal life was unraveling. I recall meditating, journaling, PRAYING for something to preoccupy my mind and help me with the daily stressors of life. So, while on a walking one day, I came across this yoga studio. I had never practiced yoga, but I was willing to try anything to help with my emotional chaos. That was the beginning of my journey as a yoga student and for the next five years I would practice and grow as a yogi in this complex yoga “community”. Late 2016, I was diving deeper into my practice, wanting a true sense of community and I had started to question certain yoga “norms”. That’s when my curiosity about teaching yoga increased and over the next few months, Curvy Chick Yoga was born. Curvy Chick Yoga is a Chicago-based yoga company that specializes in private yoga practice tailored to full-figured men and women who struggle with the inclusion of people “alike” in a traditional yoga studio with an emphasis on meditation, breathing techniques, mindfulness, and self-study.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I love the quote that says, “Great things NEVER come from comfort zones.” I love teaching yoga and in 2013, if someone would have asked me if I was happy living I would have told them, “no”. However, through that pain, I was introduced to yoga for the first time ever and through yoga, my passion was ignited. I would have to say that the biggest obstacle was getting out of my own head and getting out of my own way. I bring this up because for six months after I decided on a business name and logo I found it difficult to walk in my own truth. As I’ve continued to learn more about mindset and how our thinking plays a role in one’s own success, I’ve learned that many people will dream of success, but few have the discipline to achieve those goals. Once, I accepted where my weaknesses were, then I was ready to deal with the other challenges I would face. I’ve struggled with tuning out the noise and negativity. When I first started Curvy Chick Yoga, most of my family wasn’t on board and even now, when I have good news about the business, I have to strategically decide who to share these successes with. I even recall in the very beginning of growing the business, I stopped listening to the negative news, talk, and television. I only fed my brain and soul positive business-related motivation. Having a business has taught me to deal with the loss of friendships, the feeling of loneliness, and painful growing stages.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Curvy Chick Yoga – what should we know?
Curvy Chick Yoga was founded in 2017 with a focus on catering to curvy individuals within the comfort of their home. We work with curvy women, men, and children, leading 60-minute classes with an emphasis on meditation, breathing techniques, mindfulness, and self-study. My company is best known for mental health and movement workshops which shines a light on mental health issues individuals face daily and how yoga can counteract these overwhelming mental battles. I continue to offer weekly group sessions, privates, yoga restructuring classes for individuals recovering from injuries and pain management sessions where participants receive a personalized experience that promotes health, wellness, and balance. I am proud of our, “Peace Yoga” curriculum where we focus on youth engagement through building community with an emphasis on breathing, mindfulness, kindness, and love for self, community, and environment. My goal is to have “Peace Yoga” in a few schools by the beginning of the 2018 academic year.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
YES, YES, and YESSSS! It takes a village and I’m grateful to have a loving and supportive husband who is encouraging, while still being hard on me. He pushes me to greater heights and challenges me in ways that others can’t and won’t. Although, in the beginning, my sister wasn’t certain about Curvy Chick Yoga and my focus she has always been that realist that everyone needs in their corner. Although, she’s hard on me she always has my back and is willing to help me in any way possible. I also have an omi, who is my yoga homie, and she gives me space to be Angelica, a wife, a business owner, and a yogi all in one. I truly appreciate her love for life, yoga, and her family. I’ve been blessed to have a yoga mentor who has a wealth of knowledge and experience which she loves sharing and she too has high expectations, but I know it comes from a good place. As I’ve reflected on all the support, there is one common theme which is “tough love”.
