Meet Andy Chaw of MBT Physiological Footwear

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andy Chaw.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I believe MBT is a brand that has a higher purpose, that is having products and patents that actually make a difference to people’s lives. I saw this and invested in it and never look back. Since its founding in 1996, MBT has constantly been innovating and experimenting, developing footwear that not only provides comfort and relief, but also enhances performance. Just last year, MBT launched its first ever performance running range. The new patent pending running shoes promote mid-foot striking for a more efficient gait so you can run faster, longer. Proven by its sponsored athletes winning gold this year at the adventure race Expedition Africa and 6-Days Ultra Marathon in Hungary, MBT performance running will continue to enhance athletes’ performance and help them reach their goals.

Has it been a smooth road?
Success never comes easy. MBT was the originator of the over-sized, rocker soled shoe. It was first introduced in Switzerland in the late 1990s and quickly spread throughout Europe. The combination of extra cushioning and a rocker/pivot midsole are designed to offer protection from impact and increased efficiency throughout the gait cycle of the footstrike. In the early 2000’s, MBT was successfully introduced into the USA. That success caused other brands to copy the MBT technology – however they were marketed to consumers as having the benefit of “toning” or “shaping” legs and buttocks. MBT never made this claim. Consumer reaction to the lack of toning benefits resulted in a class action law suit, which, in turn caused a collapse of the oversize/rocker bottom shoe market.

MBT reestablished itself in 2013 with a new look and owner. Gone are the bulky silhouettes and in with slicker, lighter and improved sole construction and a new active lifestyle rebranding. In 2016, MBT launched its first performance running collection that promotes mid-foot striking, a more efficient way of running that propels you from mid-foot strike to toe-off.
