Thanks for sharing your story with us Andrew. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
After 25 years of buying and renovating and remodeling the homes I lived in with my family, I decided to make an enjoyable avocation my full time gig. Having had a successful career in sales management in consumer products, I decided to do what I love the most – working with people to help them understand the home they are about to buy. After taking the courses, getting my license and going through a self-imposed apprenticeship shadowing some of Chicago’s better and nicer home inspectors, I set out on my own. I developed a following with several great real estate brokers who understand and appreciate my approach and want the best for their clients. I was also discovered by a real estate investment fund purchasing homes throughout the state that want a trustworthy analysis of their investments.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road to where I am today was anything but easy. Most real estate brokers have their favorite home inspector already. Some companies have “exclusives” with home inspectors. There are unethical lead generating companies which are always trying to take your money. Perseverance and hard work paid off as now many of my inspections are referrals from happy home owners who appreciated the time I took to make sure they understood their investment and their new home.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Whole Home Inspections – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I inspect the “Whole Home” as the name suggests from the bottom to the top. To name a few, the roof, attic, utilities, basement, every window and door, every electrical outlet, the electrical panel, heating, AC, plumbing, kitchen appliances and the garage. I inspect single family homes of any size, age and condition, condominiums, town homes and loft units. I consider myself an advocate for the buyer as many of my clients are first time home owners, who like to be shown how things work or why they may not work well. I never editorialize; I see what I report and report what I see and provide the best analysis I can. The physical inspection is only half the job. When I get home, I prepare a thorough and lengthy report including the photographs I have taken. The report can serve to negotiate repairs which may be required. The report also includes suggestions for maintenance and proper up keep of the home. I personally love Chicago’s inventory of older homes. I have personal experience owning and rehabbing them and enjoy exploring them with my clients, finding the unusual nuances so many of them offer.
I am very proud that I recently did an inspection that was a third time referral. It started with a condo inspection with a happy buyer, who referred me to a friend who bought a single family home and was happy and referred me to a friend who bought a condo. I am happy that they all were so pleased with my work that they referred me.
What sets me apart from most home inspectors is that I take the time to answer questions, show the Buyer how things work and make people happy.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I am in the process of re doing my web site and adding a connection to various social media sites. I hope this will be a busier year for me and I am seeking out relationships with real estate investment companies to inspect their properties.
