Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Trager.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My interest in organization began early in my college years helping friends and relatives organize their lives and spaces. After discovering this passion, I completed a custom curriculum at Bradley University that included an internship in the organizing industry and publication in a professional journal. I graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Family and Consumer Sciences and a minor in Business Management. I started working with my own clients in January 2006. Ever since, I’ve enjoyed creating calm, enjoyable spaces. As part of the inaugural class of Certified Professional Organizers, I sat for the first ever certification exam for Professional Organizers in 2007. I’m currently a member of the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO) and served for eight years on the Board of Directors of their Chicago chapter. I served as secretary for three years, president for four and director at large for one. I’m also the former Chair of the NAPO Higher Education Taskforce, a nationwide committee formed to design and implement an educational curriculum for a bachelor’s degree in organizing and productivity.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Like starting any business, there are always bumps in the road. Over the years, I’ve learned what kind of projects and client with which I work well; which means I’ve also learned what kind of jobs aren’t a great fit. It’s allowed me to utilize my network and know when to refer a project to a colleague. And, even though I know the organizing side of the company, the business side can be a challenge from time to time! Figuring out my market, how to connect with them and where, and maintain a presence online is always a struggle!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Amy Trager, Certified Professional Organizer – what should we know?
I offer a variety of organizing services in the city of Chicago and suburbs. I guide individuals and companies through the stress caused by misplaced and excess stuff. My team and I strive to create calm and peace in the homes and offices of my clients to present them with the opportunity to live the lives they desire and deserve. Whether looking for guidance in your home or office, the systems created will be customized to both the physical space and the people using the items/space. I’m proud to be a generalist in the industry. It allows me to help a client with their kitchen, then realize we can streamline their office and clear out space in the garage. I can help them complete their projects entirely. Many companies and organizers now specialize in a particular area, but we can tackle it all! I’m confident that our calm, holistic approach makes the process of organizing – what can be stressful and emotional for many – easier and quicker.
Do you feel like our city is a good place for businesses like yours?
Absolutely! There are so many people in this city, and it’s surrounding area, that need assistance making sense of their space. People are constantly moving, changes jobs, creating new family dynamics… All those things can make for a chaotic space.
