Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Kartheiser.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My mom had her own interior design business since I was young. I used to spend hours in her office scouring through her trade magazines, wallpaper books, fabrics, etc. I did not recognize, by the time I went to college, that I should have gone into design then, so off I went to college and went to work in the business world.
When I bought my first condo I “hired” my mom to do all the interior design. After we spent weeks upon weeks walking the halls of the Merchandise Mart to choose all of the furnishings and textiles for my new home, I realized I was in the wrong line of work and that design is where my passion was.
So I went to work with my Mom. She was my design school and my partner for 10 years until I had children. I decided to stay home with my kids and once they were in school full days, I was ready to get back to work, but this time on my own. It has been (4) years since I have started Amy Kartheiser Design.
Has it been a smooth road?
Starting your own business is always going to be a leap of faith and of course, you are going to face numerous challenges. You can read as much as you want on the subject of running a successful business but a lot is done by simply jumping in head first and learning as you go with lots of fine-tuning of the processes along the way.
Just when I felt I had my systems down, I hired employees, opened up a studio, etc., so the business is constantly evolving and growing and I keep learning from it all. I am a firm believer, however, that growth and knowledge happen when you meet challenges, so I am not opposed to it.
It generally teaches me lessons I will not forget again. I also believe a wonderful mentor is key. They can really guide you and hopefully set you in motion in a straighter path than you would have otherwise.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Amy Kartheiser Design – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am an Interior Designer and I specialize in residential design. I love the design that joins traditional elements with modern ones. I feel the old and new balance each other out and their relationship in a room make the space interesting. However, I am a true believer in designing to our client’s needs and lifestyle, so we can tailor a space that works for them. Therefore, listening to our clients is key.
Those first years out of college, working in sales, were so impactful on who I am today, I learned about customer service and truly hearing my clients, about time management, about providing solutions to problems, etc. It is an incredibly helpful background to have had when you are starting out on your own. A lot of people working in this industry are incredibly creative but I truly believe you need to have the combination of creativity and a business mind in order to keep to our number one goal, which is client satisfaction.
What role has luck (good luck or bad luck) played in your life and business?
I don’t think luck has anything to do with my life or my business. I am a true believer in hard work. There is a great quote by Leonardo Da Vinci that sums up how I live/work: “People of great accomplishments rarely sat back and let things happen to them.
They went out and happened to things”. I think the best part of my work is that I am passionate about it and I was able to turn something I love into a business. If you do work you love, and work hard at it, the rest will come.
