Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandra Sims.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My story began with a fortunate foundation of humanism and interdependence. My family, my faith, my education and my passions have been fueled by the generosity and encouragement received from others.
I was privileged to attend the oldest independent school for gifted students in the country – The Roeper School – that was also deeply rooted in a social justice philosophy. My personal growth extended to a myriad of leadership and athletic pursuits… namely soccer, basketball, volleyball and equestrian camps. I found that while I relished the competition it was the collaboration, teamwork, and fellowship that was the most rewarding.
In 2010, I graduated with honors from Northwestern University’s School of Education and Social Policy – where I found “my people” – and honed skills that continue to serve me well! From there I was awarded a Coro Fellowship. As described, “The Coro Fellowship in Public Affairs develops the next generation of aspiring change makers. Today’s complex urban environments present constantly evolving challenges and opportunities, creating an increasing need for leadership with the ability to forge connections and solve problems across all sectors.” My service was in St. Louis, Missouri and the proximity to Ferguson in 2011 and 2012 provided a first-hand view of the emerging crisis.
Motivated by President Barack Obama’s education and social policies, I was tapped to head his 2012 Presidential Campaign for the St. Louis region re-election effort. Following President Obama’s historic victory, I continued as a State Coordinator with Organizing for Action (OFA) and relocated to the Chicago headquarters. It was there that I more fully recognized the importance of voting rights and parlayed that invaluable experience and growing expertise towards founding the Chicago-based Every Vote Counts. As its first Executive Director, she directed the registration of over 120,000 voters in (4) four months – the largest voter registration campaign in the country that year.
As the Campaign Manager for Kurt Summers 2014 race for Chicago City Treasurer, I was fortunate to direct Treasurer Summers’ broad and impactful platform and once elected, was named Senior Advisor for the Treasurer’s Office and helped advance an aggressive and strategic agenda of financial equity and access. The documented and a widely lauded initiative called “Chicago’s 77” – visiting 77 neighborhoods in 77 days, aided the passing of landmark legislation for improved taxpayer investments, developed constituent communication program and served as liaison for all levels of government and political influencers.
The recent establishment of my own firm, APS, and Associates, distills the remarkable experiences and advantages of mentoring from extraordinarily talented and gifted people throughout my life. The launch of my firm is a “dream realized” and provided vast proficiency to a variety of clients in governmental affairs, grassroots organizing, non-profit and political strategizing.
Has it been a smooth road?
I am fortunate to observe that is has been a smooth road to date, with few major obstacles. It has not been as linear as I expected (probably a naïve expectation), so I am particularly proud of my ability to adapt to unforeseen circumstances.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We provide applied techniques and expert consultation across the public affairs sector that include private, governmental, political, philanthropic, community organizing and social activism. Personalization of your core objectives is our primary mission, as we will develop a compressive plan that incorporates the trade tools – field data, metrics, polling, community ascertainments, in-depth analysis, communication strategies and social media – to strengthen our efforts and meet the goals. Specific emphasis will be given to reaching underrepresented citizens and vital constituents. We are metrics driven and people focused. These forces, working in coordination, can have an immense impact. APS & Associates has proven capabilities and experience to consult county, city, and other local government agencies in this current public affairs climate. Candidates, Public officials, Non-profits, and private sector clients place their confidence in us to provide expert work product, advisory guidance, and innovative problem-solving. I am most proud of the authentic relationships we have nurtured and sustained with grassroots leaders and stakeholders. THEY ARE THE LIFEBLOOD OF THE COMMUNITY.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes, I think our public official, corporations, and non-profits are all in need of support connecting with the community. There is a lot of business!
Yes, I would recommend them launching!
