Life and Work with Maisha Boyd

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maisha Boyd.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I began doing nails when I was 13 years old. In my early twenties, I got inspired to go nail school because I was tired of correcting my nails after leaving the nail shops. Also, I was over working for corporate and I wanted to pursue my dreams as a nail artist and a singing artist. I worked for the Domestic Violence court for 6 years and I was feeling like a robot, every day having to do the same task wasn’t a challenge for me and I was bored. I attended nail school in the evening part time for 6 months until I completed the necessary hours to graduate nail school. I wanted to have fun making money, so I figured what better way to make money off my talents doing nails and singing. So, I stepped out on faith got licensed as a nail tech and the rest was history. I’ve been featured on BET RIP the Runway, The Oprah Show, Nike, Addidas, NFL Players, New York Fashion Week. Nail Taxi etc. I’m now currently in Hyde Park/Kenwood inside of a salon called Roc N STYLES BEAUTY LOFT. My goal is to expand the MB Luxury Nail Lounge within the next year and provide more nail techs to help serve our community and give them a fun, unique, pleasant relaxing environment. Here at MB Luxury Nail Lounge, it’s more than just nail services. We help uplift, build, motivate, inspire and empower our community. I’m so thankful and grateful to our customers.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasnt been a smooth road at all. Ive been to many shops to work and left from out growing the space. Throughout this journey, I definitely have had challenging times but I’ve realized it’s all apart of the process. God bless me with a healthy baby boy on Dec 14, 2014 name Tariq Nasir Moore 2 days after giving birth to my son, I had to go into immediate brain surgery due to the Dr giving me an epidural and puncturing 2 holes in my spine causing blood to form to my brain. Talk about my life, flashed across my eyes. I immediately went into warrior mode because I new I had to survive and raise this powerful son. The creator truly blessed me with another chance at LIFE and I vowed to God that I would give God all the glory spread the word, inspire and motivate people that God is real and all things through God is possible. My advice to other women is never give up on yourself no matter what life may bring to you. Life obstacles can make you stronger or break you down and I wanted to be a example to show that even though I may have been broken down God gave me the strength to get strong and come back better than before.
God is real and able to change lives 24 hours a day. I’m still pushing and growing as a mom, artist, daughter, lover, sister and a friend.

Please tell us about MB Luxury Nail Lounge.
I’m a professional nail artist, I specialize in pedicures, manicures, Jelly Pedi, paraffin wax treatment, no chip manicures and specially made all natural Satiny Soft Scrub. I’m known for giving long lasting services. I’m most proud of the good positive energy and services we give to our customers. I’m also most proud of us giving back to the community. What sets me apart from others is that our customers can feel a good energy and that helps our customers to relax and allow us to serve them well.

Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
My particular field is predominantly women. There are plenty of opportunities for women in the nail industry but it takes a lot of dedication and hard work. Projections predict growth in the nail industry which translate into even more opportunities for women to be apart of the nail industry.
