Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Lieb.
Kim, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I became a mommy to boy/girl twins at the end of 2014 and it was transformational, to say the least! The political news cycle in 2015 was conjuring up a lot of emotions and I felt the need to do something to help spread positivity and inclusivity amongst our youth. My colleague from the Agency world, Tia, and I had the vision to use our years of marketing and PR experience and layer in our jobs as moms to create a brand platform that gives kids a voice and a way to express their views on those issues that impact all of our futures. That same year we launched our online store – LittleActivists.com!
Little Activists features t-shirts and onesies with messages to empower children to think, to embrace and consider the world at large when making daily choices—whether it’s spreading positivity, standing up for a friend or rescuing stray animals. And to share that message in a way that’s both fun and engaging. It begins and reinforces the cycle of socially conscious living and giving, and also helps parents open dialogue about social issues at an early age. The response was AWESOME and we began receiving requests for adult sizes, as well. In 2016 we launched our Activists Apparel collection on the site!
While the store has been a great vessel to spread messages of kindness and inclusivity, we have also had some wonderful opportunities along the way to raise funds for other organizations through our Project aWEARNess program. In addition, I have been able to visit schools and TV stations to discuss anti-bullying and the importance of the Upstander movement. In fact, I am currently working on a Little Activists anti-bullying workshop to introduce to youth groups and schools to help encourage our superheroes of change to be buddies, not bullies!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have definitely hit some roadblocks along the way! Retail is a whole new ballgame and there is a lot of trial and error, and many unexpected expenses. Oh, and the self-doubt has briefly taken over on a few occasions! I do my best to stay focused on my mission to leave a positive footprint on the world. I was once advised to use joy as my compass and only do things that are fun, feel good, and are in alignment with what I authentically desire. I LOVE that advice!
My advice to young women starting their journey: Figure out what you REALLY want to do. Don’t trick yourself, make sure it is what you truly desire. It may not be the journey you originally envisioned, but if you keep following the breadcrumbs; you will get there!
Please tell us about Little Activists.
Little Activists is currently known as a t-shirt line, but it has, and will continue to, become so much more! I am inspired to raise my own little activists and also use the brand as a platform to encourage more kindness and inclusivity in the world. It is becoming a movement and I am SO proud to have a channel to spread messages of gender equality, human rights, animal rights, anti-bullying and simply making the world kinder and more inclusive. I see our youth as agents for positive change, and I’m ready to build an army of Little Activists because the world needs them now more than ever!
What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
Be authentic. You will do your best work when you are being true to yourself. Work will be more fun and heed the best results. Like my friend told me, ALWAYS use joy as your compass.
