Life and Work with Jennifer Mai

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Mai.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’m pretty sure, I was born a foodie. I don’t remember much when I was younger, but my parents would tell me that I would overindulge and not know when to stop, that I literally had “tummy aches” almost every day growing up. I used to steal my dad’s cell phone and take pictures of food and stare at them all day long. Then, I remember my very first food picture on my very first cell phone. It was of corn of course (my favorite veggie). I thought it looked so pretty and I continued to take more pictures of food I found to be easy on the eye. When I got old enough and realized what social media was and Instagram came out, I thought “how cool! There’s a place where you can just upload pictures! This is where I will put all my food adventures.” So, I did just that and I mixed in some of my personal pictures, but my food content received the most attention of course. I slowly transferred it over to mostly food (and drink) and it just blossomed from there.

Has it been a smooth road?
Well, I initially started doing this as a hobby, and it still is. So, I can’t say that I have really faced any major obstacles or challenges. My advice would be to start with what you are truly passionate about. Don’t think about making the picture look “pretty” or adding a thousand filters, but just start with what you love. If you are capturing what you love, that’s honestly all that matters. You can’t get more authentic than that.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with JenEatsChi – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Most of my content is food-centric. You’ll find a couple lifestyle or travel shots, but it’s mainly food and drink. As I previously stated, I love everything about food. I like to smell it, touch it, talk about it, make it, serve it, capture it and of course EAT it. As much as everyone loves a pretty photo op, if I didn’t like how it tasted, I won’t post it. Everything you see on my feed I have enjoyed consuming. I’ve had many moments where I felt proud during this journey, but I would say my biggest accomplishment is hearing feedback from others, whether they’re my peers, friends, family or complete strangers. It is a great feeling when I have someone come up to me and tell me they use my Instagram as a resource for where to dine next. I have friends tell me they bookmark my posts so they can order that same dish when they go out to eat and that they’re always satisfied. That to me is so truly rewarding.

Who have you been inspired by?
I wouldn’t say there was anything specific that set me up. I’ve just always been very motivated and driven, especially when it comes to something I love. I can thank my parents for that because they are the reason I am where I am today. They have always believed in me and told me I could do anything I put my mind to. In my opinion, that may be the most cliche statement, but extremely accurate.
