Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Calvillo.
Jennifer, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Hello, I’m better known as “JCAL” in the beauty industry. I have been a hairdresser for the past six years. I started working out of my car, doing house calls. Building my clientele, I had nothing but passion and a love for hair & make up. I didn’t have a license at the time so it limited me to certain things I could to do. I catered mostly to the event industry (wedding, quinceaneras, bachelorette parties, & professional photographers). You name it, I was there making a woman beautiful. My journey has been anything but an easy one. My passion for hair came in at an early age. I always knew I wanted to do hair, the moment I saw my mother lose hers. I was about seven-eight when I have seen my mother bald. She was battling cancer and lost! My mother was a beautiful woman, and not just because she was my mother but because she really was. She had beautiful, thick hair, and she would always pick it out put s little blush on with her lipstick and head on out. And when I saw my mother lose her hair, I felt as if she lost a big chunk of herself. Hair for me is beyond anything in this world for a woman, it makes us, it’s our protective shield, and when I saw her lose her battle, I told myself at the age of eight that I would make women throughout the world beautiful. Whether it was through a compliment or me personally providing a service. And thankfully so, God has blessed me enough to pursue my dream.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As my journey in the hairdressing world, it has been anything but easy. I’ll never forget I separated from my daughter’s father, at the time, I was in school and I faced a great challenge of how I was going to get through. When I tell you God was in the midst of my success, he really was. I was fortunate to have awesome teachers at my school that allowed me to take my daughters with me and finish my cosmetology course and helped me obtain my license. I struggled a great deal emotionally and mentally. But through the grace of God, I made it. Every challenge I faced only brought me that much closer to where I am today. If I could tell anyone starting a business and venture out on your own, it is a beautiful thing. But you will face challenges and obstacles that you may think will slow you down, but truth be told, embrace them. Because there is an amazing plan in store for you. Do not give up! Bounce back and come back stronger. Trials and tribulations aren’t a bad thing, they are at the time obviously, but once you go through it, it’s all well worth it!
Please tell us about Unique Hair Boutique.
I specialize in all hair types, there isn’t really anything I don’t do or try to do. I grew up in a diverse neighborhood which allowed me to be a diverse hairstylist. My passion is updos and makeup. It’s how I started and always makes me proud of how much I’ve grown. I am most proud of my mobile services. A lot of times, people for health reasons mainly or distance reasons cannot always come to me. I typically extend my services to those around IL to ensure everyone gets serviced. I offer every service at the salon that I do during my mobile services. Cuts, color, updos, makeup, hair extensions, etc. What sets me apart from other hairdressers is my passion for hair, I don’t awe any clients as a number, I see them as a family. I genuinely love my clients and appreciate them for believing in me. Without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I take very good care of them all the time and it truly sets me apart from every salón near me.
Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
As women, we have opened up a new window for lots of opportunities. We can do anything we really set our mind too. Sure, it doesn’t come easy, but if we really want something we will rise and focus on the goal. I do believe that more and more positions are being opened and available for us women. Now, the real question would be, are we taking advantage of them? Everyone has the same opportunities if you truly believe in it.
