Life and Work with Coleen Otero

Today we’d like to introduce you to Coleen Otero.

Coleen, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
As a NYC native I found myself, a young entrepreneur, graduating High School in Orlando, FL. Being a city that is totally polar opposite to my home town always drove me to seeking communities with women that were ‘go-getters’ and looking to extract the best out life. I started an online group called Get it Girls in 2014, I hosted monthly calls discussing life, goals, business, faith… it was awesome! I found myself leaning more towards business topics and naturally attracting more women in business. The name and feel of the tribe was shifting and morphed into what we know today as CEO Chicks. We trademarked some years ago and been running ever since.

A good girlfriend of mine Jennifer Enders from Chicago kicked off The CEO Chick Illinois Chapter. Chicago is home away from home, its where I found my tribe or my tribe found me. The women are full of life, fight, boldness, tenacity and faith! We cry, pray and work together!!! The motto of our organization is to collaborate, create and dominate… that’s exactly what we do!

In addition to running the network, you can find me working with amazing entrepreneurs developing their brand identity. Traveling city to city, from studio to war rooms, networking to speaking and coaching this is the summation of my professional life!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I love the recent hot posts that read, “Of course, I struggle, I just don’t quit!” There are challenges but I truly believe resistance is necessary to build strength both physically and mentally. For most people starting is easy but STICKING IT OUT, that is the fight! I recently had a hurdle to overcome and that was completing my first book.

Geez! Talk about anxiety! Thoughts like, “this is so permanent”, “is it going to be good enough?”, “let me add a bit more content.” This my friends went on for years. I needed a push from someone else. I needed to hear my coaches, family, and friends say, “girl you got this!”

So, my advice to any young lady on the verge of stepping out into her entrepreneurial or career journey is to choose her circle wisely. Get around winners even if it makes you totally uncomfortable. Hunt down the information and knowledge you need to get over your hurdles and pain points. “Never wish life were easier, wish that you were better.” I love this quote by Jim Rohn so much that I put it in my book.

Simply put, the voices around you will become the voices in you! So, know that you have the right to be selective!

Please tell us about YourBeautyXpert and CEO Chicks.
I am a true born creative, an introvert with a twist of an extrovert. I am known for beauty, branding and business. I started doing hair at the age of 12 and after a couple decades or so, with the wave of social media, clients began asking me to help them with their online image. Beauty introduced me to her friend named Branding. A majority of my day is spent coming up with creative ways to help my clients disrupt the market. Helping them express the essence of their brand products and services thru media. I work with a ton of creatives daily, it’s pretty cool. I do all of this under my company, Your Beauty Xpert, LLC.

I’ve been able to work with clients like Sherri Shepherd from The View. More recently on set as Lead Hair Stylist for Black Girls Rock! 2018 Campaign featuring Queen Latifah and Directed by The Alan Ferguson! I’ve been honored to help so many women launch their brands as well. From authors, coaches to boutiques and laundry mats owners. Most of which I met through my women empowerment network.

The CEO Chick Network is a business and social network, it’s my party with a purpose! My team and I log online every Monday teaching and equipping women on business acumen. We get together in various cities regularly to continue to build relationships and explore collaborative opportunities. We recently took a trip to Europe! One word, DOPE! CEO Chicks is like no other network because we are not built on events. We are built on information and education. If you want knowledge and growth, join. If you want to socialize and take pics for “the gram” attend our events, most of which are open to the public. There is something for everyone!

Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
So, I sat back in my chair for this question, LOL! HECK YEAH! My childhood played a huge part in who I am. My parents are both Jamaican. I watched them both work, go to school and take care of my 2 sisters and I when growing up. We ate, slept and breathed WORK. When I completed high school and told my parents I was going to beauty school my father was pissed. We came from a family that went to college and right into the medical field. So, I guess you could say I had to prove to my daddy that I was right and he was not. LOL! I was the first to marry, first to purchase a home, first to have my own business, even though I was the last to be born. Yep, I am “the baby”! Needless to say, mom and dad are very proud and supportive of me!
