Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashleigh Robinson.
Ashleigh, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always had a passion for beauty but I ended up sort of falling into eyebrows. I have a bachelor’s degree in public relations and was literally a month away from starting graduate school at NYU, when I decided to put that on pause and pursue my passion for beauty. I attended the Aveda Institute to study aesthetics and initially wanted to focus on makeup artistry. However, the perfectionist in me loved doing brows. I started my career in 2014 as an Arch Expert for Benefit Cosmetics in Ulta Beauty fresh out of beauty school. In my 3 years in that role, I generated the highest service numbers out of every store in the district! I realized I had a gift that was bigger than my job and that I would get more satisfaction out of what I do by doing it on my own terms. Leaving that position was essential to my growth. I’ve been renting in my friend’s beauty bar, Crème de la Lash, for almost a year now. Taking that leap of faith was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. The Ash Does Brows brand has been blessed to grow so much and has taken an identity of its own that has become bigger than what I could imagine, and I owe it to my clients. I have crafted a clientele of the most amazing, loyal, supportive group of women. They constantly pour into me and encourage me and many have become my friends over the years. My life has been all about brows for the last 4 years and I can’t see life any other way. I get an amazing sense of satisfaction from the fact that something as small as eyebrows have such an impact on someone’s self-esteem. It’s so rewarding to know that I have a hand in helping someone look and feel beautiful for life’s big moments, especially since most people have suffered from some sort of eyebrow-related trauma. I enjoy doing brow rehabs and giving people positive experiences.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a remarkably smooth road so far. Honestly, the hardest part was convincing myself to stop doubting my gift and make the jump. I had to realize that when God gives you a gift or talent, there will always be room for you no matter how many other people do what you do. My advice to other women would be, if you’re passionate about something and it’s burning a hole into you, feed that fire and jump! Accomplishing your goals truly depends on how hard you’re willing to work on them. Don’t be afraid to reach out to other women who are doing what you want to do for help, advice and support, we need to network and remove the stigma of looking at each other as competition instead of collaborators.
Please tell us about Ash Does Brows.
I’m a licensed esthetician that solely focuses on eyebrows with an extensive clientele filled with Chicago’s millennials, creatives and entrepreneurial movers and shakers. I offer customized brow services and a unique experience. I handcraft each of my clients’ brows with my signature technique. I focus on maintaining the most flattering natural shape of the brow and specialize in brow rehabs. I’m so proud of the way my brand has taken off, especially my social media presence. My clients share their selfies and videos of their services, give me shout outs and glowing reviews on all platforms.
Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
There are plenty of opportunities for women especially in the beauty industry, we are the biggest consumers of personal care services and products and it’s only right that we take control of the industry. We can dominate through collaboration. I think often times people tend to feel threatened or discouraged because a market seems over-saturated but if you channel that energy into working with your peers beautiful things can happen.
