Conversations with the Inspiring Sandhya Nair

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandhya Nair.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As a creative person, I have viewed things around me differently. Growing up, I was always fascinated by colors and textiles, which made me curious to learn more about it. I did my B.Sc. in Fashion Technology from VIFT Bangalore, India. After earning my three-year degree, I started off as an intern to a freelancer PR in Mumbai, then from there, I worked as a merchandiser in different export companies and then as an assistant designer to an independent fashion designer in Bangalore. After all the experience, I wanted to start my own label that would benefit the cause that is close to my heart.

Growing up, I’ve visited NGO’s (Non-Governmental Organization) in India that rehabilitate women and child survivors of sex trafficking and abuse. So, when I launched my label, I decided that I’ll be a voice for this cause through my designs and help to benefit the child and women survivors.

I sell my label online and take custom orders through consultation. Every time I sell, a part of the sale goes to benefit girl survivors for their daily expenses and education. I love my work and I’m very passionate about the cause, so how tough the situation gets it makes me even more committed every day.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Not at all! If one doesn’t face challenges, then one shall not learn to solve any problem. My journey so far has been a very rough one and I’m sure there’s many more to come. There’s more pain, sacrifices, sleepless days, betrayals but no one wants to talk about it. I don’t want to mislead any upcoming talent out there by saying that its just hard work and talent.

I have learned many things from my mistakes and that made me strong to handle situations better, as my business grows. Every entrepreneur faces different challenges and goes through their own struggle, but based on my experience I would tell other women entrepreneurs to be tough, work hard and be passionate about your work. Don’t be scared to make mistakes and trust your ability. Don’t hesitate to learn new things related to your work. Never break down and lose hope, fight back.

What should we know about Aiyna Atelier? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I’m the Founder/Head Couturier of my fashion label “Aiyna Atelier”. “Aiyna” means mirror in Hindi and “Atelier” means an artist’s workshop in French. Mirror reflects the true image and that’s exactly what my designs represent. I want every woman to feel confident under their own skin and express themselves through my designs.

Established in 2014 to help sexually trafficked and abused children and women. Aiyna Atelier is a heterogeneous, luxurious & empirical brand that represents the pinnacle of modern fashion and are unsurpassed for their quality and attention to details. Each design is created by taking every single detail into consideration. From designing to sourcing best quality fabric, and creating the beautiful designs with the help of my highly skilled artisans in India. Every collection consists of exquisite embellishments, color dying, and unique design elements. It includes Pret line, Haute Couture, Exquise (Made of Fit) & Resort.

I’m proud that I’m able to employ women and men from broken and underprivileged background to fulfill their dreams. Same time I feel blessed to help the girl survivors of sex trafficking and abuse.

Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
I come from India, and growing up as a girl wasn’t easy. Not only for me, but it’s also difficult for every woman there, as people around us can’t stay away from making an unnecessary judgment about us. Women should dress a certain way, shouldn’t be out of our homes in the night, stay home and cook, get married and make a family. I was able to follow my dreams just because of my family, my great support system. Many women don’t have that kind of a support system. Hence, in some parts of India discrimination against women and female infanticide is still at large.

For me, it’s not about being superior to men but to be treated as a human being. Women shouldn’t be treated like an object or a slave. Let it be a girl child or a woman, give them respect. I’m happy to be a woman because of many things that I’ve experienced has given me the strength to fight for the women in need. Today, whatever I do, is to help women to be treated with respect and make them strong to fight back the odds. I’ve come across many women with many similar experiences throughout my work and personal life.
