Conversations with the Inspiring Mariasa Slaughter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariasa Slaughter.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Mariasa. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started doing makeup shortly after graduating from UIC. I studied pictures and techniques and started practicing on friends. Once I felt confident enough, I started taking clients and working with photographers. As my passion grew, I decided to expand into esthetics to be able to assist my clients in achieving their skincare goals.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been a smooth road at all. I completely switched lanes from studying for the LSAT and going to Law School to doing freelance makeup. I had to start building my foundation again and it wasn’t easy. I had no idea where to start or anyone to help me. So i wrote down a plan to get started, i had goals for everyday. It caused me to lose money, friends, and experiences but I’ve grown from it all. I learned some hard lessons early on due to lack of experience and did my best to go above and beyond to  rectify situations. Having no guidance helped me become a better artist, service provider and businesswoman.

The best advice I can give is to focus on  your lane and stay in it. Find what works for you, put your head down and get to work. Be transparent, it has always helped me because people respect that I’m willing to say I don’t know how but I’m going to find out.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I’m an Makeup Artist and Esthetician

I specialize in makeup, full body waxing, eyelash extensions and skin care treatments.

I’m most proud of helping women and men become more confident by helping them solve their skin concerns.

What sets me apart is the care. I genuinely care about how you feel before, during, and after your service. I involve my clients in the service to gauge how they may be feeling.  Do they have a feeling of being fully accommodated or not? They love the attention to detail, and the personalized plans we come up with for their skin care goals and waxing schedules.

Makeup is my passion work. I love working on editorial projects and showing the power of simplistic looks through images really highlighting the natural beauty of a muse.

I love working with brides and everyday women as well that simply want to enhance their natural beauty. It’s great to give tips and tricks to help women feel better about themselves everyday.

It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
I love to read. There are far too many books to list because so many have helped me become who I am. I find inspiration in the beauty of words. Self-help books like the “Power of Now”  which highlights the importance of being present. Along with poets such as Rupi Kumar, Samantha King, and Alex Elle from instagram. The acknowledgment and honoring of feelings and affirmations is mostly what I’ve gained from those accounts.  My career has been greatly influenced by my journey to becoming a better, healed and productive person one that can in turn help others feel well and heal themselves. Books are my go to for that, and I believe everyone has a book they can connect with on a deeper level.
