Check out Marriam Khan’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marriam Khan.

Marriam, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I was born in Pakistan and raised in Nigeria. I moved to Vermont when I married the love of my life, my high school sweetheart. I always wanted to go to Art School but ended up pursuing a Master’s Degree in Applied Psychology due to family pressure, for the sake of a more secure future.

But at heart, I have always been an artist. When I moved to the US 17 years ago, I found the freedom to follow my dreams. My humble beginnings started in the back room of a flower shop processing roses, washing buckets and shoveling a few feet of snow in the Green Mountain State. I decided to go to flower school and started taking floral workshops. Hard work in America pays off. When I left Vermont, not only did I own a successful flower business, I was also the owner of a thriving cake business!

I started making cakes for my own daughters and the joy that it brought to my kids made me take it up professionally as well. The business model worked out well, I did more flowers in the summer months which was wedding season and more cakes in the slower winter months. The temperature worked out perfectly for both mediums. Cakes were another creative outlet for the artist in me. I love making themed cakes with a lot of detail.

Chicago has been very kind to me, I am blessed. It is quite the humbling experience starting from scratch when you leave at the peak. I am grateful to all who have helped me in this journey and hope to continue to thrive with their support and my hard work.

The feeling to make someone’s special day a little more special is my motivation. My goal is to bring happiness and joy to my clients through my art.

I am blessed with two daughters and a wonderful husband. We moved to Naperville from Vermont, where I left a little piece of my heart. Illinois has been wonderful to us, welcoming and full of opportunity. I like to workout, watch baking shows with my girls, watch cricket with my husband and drink tea sitting outside on the steps of my house. I love animals. I am obsessed with peacocks. My favorite city is London because my sisters live there. My life is full of joy, and I have a ton to be thankful for. And I am blessed to have clients who appreciate my art and the love that goes into it.

My message to the world is “Let peace, knowledge, and kindness be what we have to share.”

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I have always loved flowers, ever since I was a little girl. I am blown away by their beauty, colors, fragrance and the different varieties, God is the best artist! I have been designing professionally for the last 15 years. Working with flowers is therapeutic for me, I love creating with flowers, for all occasions. I am a one-woman show, so each and every stem that you see in your arrangement is carefully picked, processed and designed by me, making sure at every stage that it is perfect.

I started making cakes for my own daughters and the joy that it brought to my kids made me take it up professionally as well. After hours spent in making sugar work and smoothening the buttercream, the reaction that I get from my clients is what makes me keep doing what I do. I bake from scratch using real ingredients that are either organic, humane and or local. My cakes are covered in smooth buttercream that looks like fondant (I obsess with the smooth bit) and the decorations are handcrafted out of fondant.

The feeling to make someone’s special day a little more special is my motivation. My goal is to bring happiness and joy to my clients through my art.

What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
Success to me is happy clients. To me, personally, it is being able to implement their vision and create something I am proud of as well. I am a perfectionist and all about the details. I set high standards for myself, and success is meeting those standards.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
