Today we’d like to introduce you to Francine Mittenthal.
Francine, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
While I have loved art, crafts and “taking pictures” since I was a child, becoming a photographer never crossed my mind. A health scare in 2008 motivated me to finally hire a professional photographer to capture our family so our three daughters would always have images to remind them of our connection as a family. The photographer and I became fast friends and thanks to her advice, my husband gifted me a DSLR for the holidays in 2009. It wasn’t long before others convinced me to begin a photography business, and it took off like I had never imagined it could!
My passion for the newborn genre grew over the years, and by 2015 I began to specialize in newborn photography. I am completely fascinated by every new human I meet, and incredibly honored to work with each and every one. There is no time as magical and fleeting as the first few weeks after a family welcomes a new soul into their lives, and I’ve made it my mission to capture all the details my sleep deprived clients will too quickly forget!
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I strive to create images which capture all the precious details of my little subjects. My Images focus on the face and the sweet details which change very quickly at this stage of life, as well as connections between family members and their new addition. Newborn sessions take place in my Glen Ellyn studio within baby’s first two weeks. The studio is kept very warm for baby’s comfort, and studio lighting affords a consistent look to my images. I’ve acquired many soothing and posing techniques to keep babies comfortable while gently moving them into positions that take full advantage of their sleepy, flexible bodies. Sessions typically last 1.5-2 hours, allowing time for baby to eat, stretch and soothe as much as needed. It’s a genre like no other, with special skills required to fill a gallery with images of a relaxed, comfortable newborn!
What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
There is no doubt a successful newborn photographer must have a deep appreciation for newborns, a ton of patience (Sessions move slowly with complete respect of my little subjects’ every need.), and a strong understanding of their camera and lighting. My goal is to fill every client gallery with a good variety of clean, well-posed images of their beautiful baby captured in a relaxed, flattering manner. Doing so consistently for session after session, for nearly nine years is my definition of success.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
