Check out Allina Macko’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Allina Macko.

Allina, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I grew up in the Salon industry. My father Marty Rizzo owned multiple successful salons in the suburbs. I went to college for psychology and used my degree as a mental health counselor right out of college until my brother decided he wanted to open his own salon. He asked me to leave my counseling job and manage Salon Giovanni. I accepted and Giovanni, my Dad Marty, and I worked as a team with them to manage finances and payroll while they created masterpieces behind the chair. With my brother and father being world champion hairdressers, I saw an opportunity to work side by side with them as a makeup artist in the salon. So, after extensive training, I hustled my butt next to two seasoned pro’s and tried to keep up. Have you ever heard of baptism by fire? We did countless weddings and special events. Always learning and taking classes my skills passion and clientele began to grow. Once I gained my confidence as an artist, I was contracted by television talent, cosmetic companies like Smashbox and La Prairie, and then came my luxury Bridal clients. At this point in my career as a growing professional, I really fell in love with bridal. I have been blessed to work with some of Chicago’s best wedding vendors on many stunning weddings at the most luxurious venues in the city.

In 2011, I saw an opportunity to create my own product line. I began with a few products and purchased one formula. And then, from there after countless hours of classes, books, and trial and error, my mineral line Pure Addiction Cosmetics was born! This line is my baby! I have been able to create makeup that performs beautifully for professional artists working in film/tv/red carpet to the everyday consumer. Pure Addiction Cosmetic is a favorite amongst my natural beauty clients. There is nothing like it.

Then, in November 2017, Pouf Powder by Algio Marte was created. This hair powder line was created out of a need we saw for our clients at the salon. Pouf Powder covers grey hair and thinning areas while cleansing it and adding volume. We needed a non-aerosol organic product that our ingredient savvy clients could use. After seeing many of our clients, friends, and family be affected by cancer, we became very serious about creating safe clean products for our clients. Pouf Powder is great for people losing their hair. The formula is gentle and has Biotin and Lavender oil to stimulate the scalp. Other hair powders on the market do the exact opposite. This product not only made the look better, but most importantly feel better.

Algio Marte consists of me-Allina, Giovanni, and Marty. Haha, get it?! We came up with that in the back room of the salon laughing till we cried.

Being a successful artist and growing a luxury bridal business outside of the salon is something I am proud of, but being able to collaborate with family and creating art and products has truly been a dream and a gift.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
Both Pure Addiction Cosmetics and Pouf Powder solve a multitude of cosmetic problems. More importantly, these lines make people feel more like themselves. We are so blessed to have clientele who has become like family. We have created something that makes them feel good every time they look in the mirror. I can’t think of a more fulfilling art.

Then my art as a professional makeup artist is anything from an everyday look, to an avant-garde editorial look. I am most known for my natural bridal looks. I get booked for all sorts of different looks and occasions, but my passion truly is to just play up my clients best features. A little goes a long way when an artist is trained properly. I truly love to send a client off feeling like their most refined version of themself.

Do current events, local or global, affect your work and what you are focused on?
Absolutely! I once couldn’t stock my main product Velvet Whisper when there was that nuclear spill in Japan. No pearls, no velvet. That was terrible!

I do try to create new collections that are based on trends for the year. This sometimes goes well or is a flop.  Social media has really changed the game for newer artists. I think for makeup, people think they can YouTube their way to a career. Just like any career, you must take the time and spend the money to learn from people you aspire to be like. Spending time assisting for free from a seasoned professional is an invaluable tool. Without experience behind the chair at the salon and spending a lot of money taking master classes beyond the basics has given me an edge over the everyday artist. I think too much is given away for free online teaching bad technique and a sad excuse for sanitation. I think the newer artists coming up really need passion to excel and perform their best. That is not taught for free on YouTube.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
