Today we’d like to introduce you to Mashallah Ghouleh.
Mashallah, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I started my career in the fashion industry 14 years ago. It all started with me working freelance with various fashion and lifestyle photographers offering hair/makeup and wardrobe services. Having to pull clothing for photoshoots I was able to built great relationships with local boutiques. Working with one of these boutiques serendipitously happen to be the next chapter for me. While working with them for about four years, I was able to better understand the fashion industry from a business point of view and gain first hand exposure on how to build a brand.
As a young girl I watched all of the creatives in my family follow their dreams and make these dreams their reality. With great inspiration and encouragement from people all around me I was ready for the next chapter and a new adventure. In 2011 with the support of my incredible husband Mark Hooper I started MASHALLAH an accessory label for conscious consumers.
Since then with the overwhelming support of our community we opened our first flagship location here in Chicago’s Pilsen Art District.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
MASHALLAH is a lifestyle brand rooted in eternal beauty, merging classic elegance with a youthful vision. Our designs can be worn day or night, whether young or mature.
We create captivating and timeless jewelry that is affordable and easy to wear. Knowing what our core customers expect from our brand gives us the ability to produce items of lasting interest. We are mindful when sourcing our material and meticulous when hand making our jewelry.
I strive to employ young adults with interest in the creative fields, investing time and resources to build their skills and aid their futures.
Do you think conditions are generally improving for artists? What more can cities and communities do to improve conditions for artists?
Choosing to have an optimistic view always and so given the many resources artists have now a day in comparison to the past, I truly feel that we are in a good space. I do however believe that it is always necessary for improvements in the arts. Art tells our story, allows us to communicate and engage, offers healing and is natural human behavior.
I believe dedicated funding from the city to work with developers on designating below market rental space for non-profits, art organizations and independent artists in neighborhoods is essential to the culture of the city and is a great way to foster community interaction.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
The best way to experience MASHALLAH is through coming into our shop. Here you get a chance to see and try on various collections, have first dibs on limited edition pieces and seeing our studio!
Another fun factor to look forward to when visiting our shop is having access to works of local and international artists across diverse disciplines. I curate the shop in such a mindful way with respect to the overall lifestyle of our brand and patrons. All items we carry are handmade, we pride ourselves in custom collaborations and variety.
