Art & Life with David R. Becker

Today we’d like to introduce you to David R. Becker.

David R., please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I am a Chicago artist through and through. I went to the American Academy of Art in Chicago for 4 years, worked at 2 different ad agencies in this fine city for over 30 years, started classes that became a school and taught art at the Palette and Chisel for over 20 years and most of my work depicts the fine city of Chicago. I teach and paint all across the world but I always love coming home to Chicago, my kind of town!

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I paint mostly in watercolors but have recently started up again in acrylics. Most of my artwork depicts the streets of Chicago where I walked from Michigan and Erie to Union Station almost every day and is a reason I paint so many of the images I saw while making the walk to the train.

The watercolor and acrylic techniques I use come from teaching classes and workshops all around the world. Teaching helps keep me on my toes and keeps my techniques fresh. I love doing series of different types of subject matter and when I get enough paintings together of one subject I try and have an exhibition for those works.

What responsibility, if any, do you think artists have to use their art to help alleviate problems faced by others? Has your art been affected by issues you’ve concerned about?
Funny you should mention this because the latest series that I have started and will be exhibiting in November on Veterans Day is a series of Armed Force’s paintings that will be hanging in my BeckerArt Gallery to honor all those men and women in the armed forces that have and are sacrificing so much for all Americans. As an artist, this is my way of thanking and honoring those men and women in the Armed Forces.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I have recently opened a studio and gallery in the town of McHenry, IL, 50 miles north of Chicago where I will be doing one big exhibit a year. I also try having an exhibit once a year at the Palette and Chisel Gallery on Dearborn street in Chicago. I have a website like most artists do and I am in the process of making it a site where you can purchase my work off the site at www.davidrbecker.com

You can also see some of my work hanging in many of the buildings in Chicago. One public piece is hanging in the Macy’s Starbucks store on the corner of Wabash and Randolph. Many others are in private collections and in office space where the general public would not have access to.
