Art & Life with Benjamn Marasco

Today we’d like to introduce you to Benjamn Marasco.

Benjamn, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I have always drawn and painted as long as I can remember. I moved to Chicago from the Metro Detroit area when I was 18 and have been here ever since! Just kind of never stopped drawing and painting. It is crazy to be able to say I do that full time now.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I dabble in pretty much everything, but if I had to narrow it down I would say I’m an illustrator, designer, painter! The inspiration behind my work varies from piece to piece. A lot of just stems from things I see or hear around the city, just anything I find intriguing I jot it down or make a sketch of to come back to later on. Honestly, I want people to take away whatever they get out of it, there’s no message I am trying to push onto the viewer. At a base level, I just like to make visually stimulating pieces.

Artists rarely, if ever pursue art for the money. Nonetheless, we all have bills and responsibilities and many aspiring artists are discouraged from pursuing art due to financial reasons. Any advice or thoughts you’d like to share with prospective artists?
Hard work and persistence will get you where you want to be, at least I hope so. I am still trying to figure it out myself. I would be doing this no matter what my financial situation was, I feel a bit guilty when I don’t create things. Just don’t listen to the people that say things like “Must be nice to draw pictures all day” or “What do you do for a real job.” They will never get it.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I am part of shows throughout the city every now and again, but you’ll have better luck finding my work on walls in the streets. I paint murals throughout Chicago, and more recently other cities in the country. You can always check some of my work out on Instagram (@frangk_) or at!
