#ChicagoCreatives: the local artists who inspire us

Through a mix of mediums, formats and perspectives local artists illuminate the unknown, color the previously black-and-white and add depth to our understanding of our surroundings, our lives, circumstances and more. Through our research process for the Thought provokers series we’ve come across so many works of art that have inspired us and we’d like to share some of those great examples of visual and performing arts, photography and other creative works with you below.

The center jet of the Buckingham Fountain comes on once an hour. We were on a time constraint and couldn’t wait. Abbey and I were lucky to be there at the right moment. The downside, was the wind would blow the mist in our direction, so I was hiding my camera under my shirt and Abbey was trying to not get her hair wet. We looked like a couple of weirdos trying to avoid getting sprayed.😂 Ballerina: @ajoy10 DM for booking info . . . #ballet #balletshoes #balletfeet #balletbody #loveofballet #worldwideballet #balletpost #lovelyballet #balletislife #balletdancer #balletdancers #worldballetproject #ballerinasofig #balletgirl #dancers #dancelife #balletbeautifulgirls #balletphotography #ballerina #ballerinas #pointe #instaballet #balletspirit #chicagogram #chicagophotographer #chicagodance #chicago

This is easily one of my most emotional photographs, and I’m more than thankful I was able to capture it. . . This mural has been around long before I was born, but has been a part of my life since I was a child. It’s a visual compilation of Black leaders, creators and pillars of the community, filled with quotes and portraits of the giants of Black American History. Sadly, it’s going to be washed out sooner than later. . . My father would take this route to get to our house when we were children, and before I was able to recognize street corners, I identified my surroundings with this wall. We have to do a better job of maintaining our communities and their identity, because the gentrification of urban culture is quickly occurring. It’s not taking its time, and we should not take ours in capturing the beauty of our existence, archiving the culture of our homes. I will be displaying this photo at my next showing later this year, and I hope to speak about why photography of our communities, is vital to our future in America. . . .
